On Saturday the owner texts a photo taken at a petrol station, sun raking across the door, and there are four pale specks on the panel that were not there when he picked the car up. He is not wrong and the film is not faulty. The particles were already in the air, and they landed in the adhesive while it was still wet.

Every shop in this trade calls its bay dust-free. Almost none of them can put a number on it, which means the claim is unfalsifiable and the argument at handover is settled by whoever is more tired. For an installer, that is unbillable rework. For a distributor or a buyer auditing a partner shop, it is an unmeasured risk sitting inside your warranty exposure.

Here is how to turn the claim into a measurement, and what to put in the contract.

Four numbers that decide whether a panel passes

1. The class of air you are actually working in. ISO 14644-1 Class 8 allows 3,520,000 particles of 0.5 µm and larger per cubic metre at rest, plus 29,300 at 5 µm. Class 9, the next tier down, allows ten times that. A well-built softwall booth sits at Class 8. An open bay with the roller door closed is Class 9 or unclassified, and a bay with a car being driven in and out is worse than either, because tyres and floor grit are the largest particle generators on the site. If the number is only measured at rest with nobody in the room, it is a marketing number.

2. Air changes and pressure direction. A Class 8 booth is normally designed around 15 to 25 air changes per hour with G4 pre-filtration and an F8 final stage, which is MERV 13 to 15 in the US notation. Pressure matters as much as filtration: the booth has to sit 5 to 15 Pa positive against the surrounding shop so that unfiltered air moves out, not in. A booth with good filters and a propped door is a very expensive way to filter the whole building.

3. Who and what is shedding. A technician moving at working pace releases on the order of 10⁵ to 10⁶ particles of 0.5 µm and above per minute, depending on clothing. Coveralls, nitrile gloves and a cap cut that by roughly an order of magnitude; a wool jumper and a beard add it straight back. Then there are the objects nobody counts: cardboard film boxes, paper towel, a floor fan, a dust sheet shaken out in the corner, the backing paper from the last panel. All of them sit inside the envelope and all of them shed.

4. The defect standard, stated by finish. On gloss black, a particle of 0.2 to 0.3 mm is visible from a metre away. Matte absorbs that same particle visually up to about 1 mm; satin sits between the two. So a shop that applies one acceptance rule across all finishes is either over-reworking matte or under-delivering gloss. The finish you sell decides the number, and the number belongs on the handover sheet.

What to ask

Why it matters

Passing range

Particle count at panel height, 0.5 µm and above

This is the dust that lands in wet adhesive

At or below 3.52 million per cubic metre at rest, and no more than double that mid-shift

Air changes per hour

Dilution rate for what people and parts release

15 to 25 ACH for a working bay

Pressure against the adjacent shop

Filtered air must push outward, not leak in

5 to 15 Pa positive, checked with a gauge, not a hand over the door frame

Filter stages

A single-stage filter loads fast and passes fines

G4 pre-filter plus F8 final, changed on a pressure-drop schedule

What technicians wear

Clothing is the largest controllable source

Coveralls, nitrile gloves, cap, no wool, no outdoor jackets inside

Written defect standard by finish

Decides what counts as rework and who pays

Gloss: one nib above 0.5 mm per panel. Zero within 25 mm of any edge. Matte: up to 1 mm

Inspection conditions

A defect you cannot see is a defect you will be shown later

500 to 1000 lux, raking light at 15 to 30 degrees, viewed at 500 to 700 mm

Five steps to put a number on the bay

Step 1. Buy a counter before you buy another squeegee. A handheld 0.5 µm particle counter costs less than one re-wrapped door panel. Sample at panel height, in the middle of the bay, once before the shift and once at the busiest hour. Write both numbers on the wall.

Step 2. Fix the envelope before you fix the people. Seal the roller door, tape the gaps around the extraction, confirm the pressure differential with a gauge, and put the filter changes on a pressure-drop basis rather than an annual date. Dry winter air is the awkward season here: static lifts particles off the floor and they cling to the panel, so the same cold-weather vinyl install rules that keep the film workable also apply to how you handle air and dust.

Step 3. Dress the room, then the technician. Coveralls and gloves, no cardboard in the bay, backing paper straight into a lidded bin, tack the panel immediately before the film goes down and once more after the first squeegee pass. Two wipes per panel is the cheapest defect control in the building.

Step 4. Inspect the way the customer will. Handover inspection under 500 to 1000 lux with the light at a low angle, at 500 to 700 mm, is what exposes nibs. Overhead lighting alone hides exactly the defects that show up in sunlight a day later. The same principle governs warna jendela mobil, where a trapped particle leaves a visible halo rather than a speck, and where the tolerance is even tighter because the film is viewed against daylight.

Step 5. Write the number into the handover. One line on the delivery sheet: gloss finish, maximum one nib above 0.5 mm per panel, none within 25 mm of an edge, inspected under raking light. It protects the installer from unreasonable claims and it gives the buyer something to audit.

What the number was worth to one shop

A 12-car-a-month shop running gloss and satin work measured 2.3 defects per panel in an open bay: 248 defects across 108 panels a month, with roughly one in three defects forcing the panel to be re-wrapped at 1.1 hours of labour. That is 83 re-wraps and about 91 hours a month.

They sealed the bay, added a two-stage filter set, put everyone in coveralls and gloves, and stopped storing film boxes inside the envelope. Particle counts at panel height fell from just under 30 million per cubic metre mid-shift to about 4 million. Defects dropped to 0.4 per panel, which is 43 defects and 14 re-wraps, roughly 16 hours.

The saving is about 75 hours of labour a month, close to USD 6,000 at USD 80 an hour, before counting the 69 panels of Vinyl Bungkus Mobil that stopped being consumed twice. The equipment cost paid back inside the second month.

Note what did not change: the film, the squeegee technique, the install sequence. Every dollar came out of the air.

The claim is the problem

“Dust-free” is not a product feature, it is a measurement, and a shop that cannot show you the number is selling you a curtain. If you are buying film by the pallet, ask your partner shops for two particle counts and one written defect standard before you sign anything. Every film mobil you sell ends up under the same air, and the ones that come back are almost never the ones with a bad roll.

A gloss wrap that fails on dust is an air-quality problem, not a film problem, and the fix is four measurements.

[34

post-2069","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-car-film

The Dust Budget: What a Dust-Free Wrap Bay Actually Has to Measure - comliker.com

<meta name="description" content="Car Wrap Vinyl rework on gloss panels is usually dust, not film.
