The roll was already tired when it arrived<\/h2>\n

A distributor in Rotterdam takes delivery of 240 rolls of gloss black cast film. The cartons look fine, the pallet wrap is intact, the invoice says nothing about dates. Six weeks later three installers call in the same week with the same complaint: the film fights them at the recesses, then lifts along the door channels after two days. One shop sends back a photo of the first two metres \u2014 wavy diagonal lines across the whole width, like the liner has been ironed.<\/p>\n

It has, in a sense. Those rolls were extruded twenty-two months earlier and spent the intervening time in a warehouse running at 74% relative humidity, stacked flat four high. The adhesive had already begun to creep; the paper liner had taken on moisture and expanded against the vinyl, then dried out in the sea container and pulled the film into tunnels. Nothing about the product was defective. It was simply old, and nobody in the chain was measuring age.<\/p>\n

Age is a specification, and almost nobody writes it down<\/h2>\n

Film has a clock, and it starts at extrusion \u2014 not at the day you open the carton. Three things determine how much of that clock is left when the roll reaches your bay.<\/p>\n

1. Age at delivery, not shelf life on the datasheet<\/h3>\n

Published storage life for cast automotive film is typically 2\u20133 years from manufacture<\/strong> at 20\u201326\u00b0C and 50% relative humidity. Chrome, mirror and other specialty laminates are usually rated 12 months<\/strong>, because the metallised layer is less tolerant of moisture. A 5-year durability claim is written on fresh film. A roll 20 months old on arrival, sitting another 6 in your rack, goes on the car with 30% of its shelf life left. The warranty still says five years; the film does not know that.<\/p>\n

Ask for the lot date on the core label and on the carton, not just the shipment date. For stock you will install inside three months, under six months from manufacture is a clean number. If you are reselling to shops who hold inventory themselves, 90 days is the tighter, fairer bar \u2014 the age you pass on is the age they will blame you for. Material matters too: a cast vinyl wrap<\/a> tolerates storage better than a calendered one, because it carries no built-in shrinkback waiting to be triggered by a warm warehouse.<\/p>\n

Humidity is the one most shops get wrong: it leaves no trace until the roll is opened. A data logger costs less than one wasted roll and settles the argument with a supplier for good.<\/p>\n

3. The physical tells at goods-in<\/h3>\n

Three defects show up before the film touches a car, all visible in ten minutes:<\/p>\n
